In South San Diego, the Probation Department reports that juvenile referrals rose 24%between 2005 and2006. While this increase is alarming, discovering that young girls are showing up as aggressors in violent crimes double the rate from twenty years ago is also distressing. Risky behaviors affect academic performance and in San Diego County this is demonstrated by the 8,000 high school and 1,000 middle school dropouts that were recorded in 2007-2008. With statistics like these demonstrating this adverse trend, it becomes apparent that the lack of supervision and safe havens is affecting the safety and future of San Diego’s children.
What is Stars and Strikes?
A fund-raising event to help provide monetary assistance to Greater San Diego After-School All-Stars, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive after-school and out-of-school programs that keep children safe and help them achieve in school and in life.
Why Stars and Strikes?
Because ASAS-GSD serves 3500 students in 15 schools throughout San Diego County, we provide free academic assistance, extracurricular enrichment programs, and sports activities five day a week during the “danger zone” hours of 3:00 to 6:00 pm. It is during this time period when youth are most at risk of becoming involved in violence, crime, drugs, and unsafe sexual behavior, and therefore, need our programs the most.
