In Brief

Engaging a Younger Generation

April, 2011

Stay ClassyThey may not have much money now, but in a few short years, high school and college students will become your organization's primary contributors of time and money. Engaging and building relationships with younger donors should be a significant part of every nonprofit's fundraising strategy.

StayClassy recently had the privilege of hosting a panel discussion on Social Fundraising at this year's AMA Cause Conference, that included three of the most innovative and successful fundraising professionals around, representing an array of organizations. The insights and expertise they shared were invaluable to any nonprofit hoping to take advantage of this important new trend in fundraising.

We recorded the panel discussion and posted it online so you, and many other nonprofits could learn from the experts.

Cheers

Love Where You Live

Listen Here:

On Thursday October 21, 2010, we taught everyone how to make their Holiday season haute! Chargers’ Linebacker Shaun Phillips hosted a star studded fashion show with San Diego Charger Players and students from After-School All-Stars at Bloomingdales in Fashion Valley. Attendees enjoyed the show while nibbling on nosh and sipping on a festive libation. In addition, they had a chance to get some Holiday shopping done early with the 15% off savings pass and learn tips to make the Holiday a success! Shaun taught what to serve to make you the best host of the season and what Bloomingdale’s styles to wear to make you shine like an all-star! Shaun Phillips in collaboration with Bloomingdale’s and our students from Southwest Middle School selected and prepared a show full of all the last fall fashions. This haute night of fun and fashion was not to be missed!

Special thanks to: Shaun Phillips, The Cheese Impresario, Stingaree, Patchi Chocolate, Flowers Vineyard and Winery and Bloomingdales

After-School All-Stars Receive Grants from LA84 Foundation and Nike Back Your Block

Donations will help provide coaches and equipment for San Diego after-school sports programs

SAN DIEGO, CALIFIFORNIA – Nov. 18, 2009 – After-School All-Stars San Diego announces the receipt of two grants last month, from the LA84 Foundation and Nike Back Your Block. The two grants will benefit the Saturday Sports Leagues at 10 elementary schools in the National School District.

After-School All-Stars San Diego received $21,672 from the LA84 Foundation, established to manage Southern California’s share of the surplus from the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The funding allows After-School All-Stars to offer its Saturday Sports Leagues for flag football, soccer and track and field at the 10 participating elementary schools in the National School District in National City at no cost to its students. The grant money will support personnel, including coaches and referees, and equipment and uniforms. After-School All-Stars is the only organization in San Diego County to receive a grant from the LA84 Foundation, which has invested $186 million, twice the $93 million of its original endowment, and served more than 2,500,000 boys and girls in Southern California to date.

In addition, After-School All-Stars San Diego received $2,500 from the Nike Back Your Block grant, which will also help with uniforms for kids in the Sports Clubs. After-School All-Stars San Diego, one of 225 organizations across the nation to receive the grant, has partnered with the local Nike store in the Las Americas Plaza in San Ysidro. As part of the partnership, the local Nike store has launched the “Give Nike Give Change” gift card campaign, whereby the store will donate an additional five dollars to After-School All-Stars for every gift card sold.

The investments from the LA84 Foundation and Nike will benefit the after-school organization dedicated to providing comprehensive out-of-school programs that keep kids safe while continuing to nurture their minds. Through programs that incorporate academic assistance, independent learning, enrichment activities and sports, kids benefit from increased confidence and success in all areas of their lives—at home, in school and in the community.

“We are very grateful for the generous donation by the LA84 Foundation and Nike Back Your Block,” said Marti Hess, executive director of After-School All-Stars in San Diego. “These grants will allow students from low-income families to participate in sports leagues and gain equal opportunities as they enter high school to participate in competitive sports.”

Shaun Phillips hosted the 2nd Annual Dodgeball-For-A-Cause Tournament

Shaun Phillips of the San Diego Chargers hosted the 2nd Annual Dodgeball-For-A-Cause Tournament benefiting After-School All-Stars. The adult-only tournament took place at In Cahoots on Monday, November 2nd. The exciting night was full of young professionals reliving their youth by competing in the old-school playground game, dodgeball.

While the teams played, dodgeball observers purchased opportunity drawing tickets to win prizes. On-site ASAS sold dodgeball shirts, NFL footballs, and food that was donated from Ranch Catering, Smokin' Joes BBQ, and Joey’s BBQ.

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to the 2nd annual Shaun Phillips’ Dodgeball event supporting San Diego All-Stars. ASAS would like to thank everyone for making this event a huge success. We hope that next year we will be able to see each and every ASAS supporter on-site to play or watch the action.

Again, thank you to everyone who participated in the dodgeball tournament, and for your commitment to the children of San Diego County.

A very special thanks to Shaun Phillips and his Chargers teammates that came out to watch the event.

Shaun Phillips Hosts His 1st Annual Golf Tournament At Maderas Golf Club on June 16th

Thank You to Our
Golf Tournament Sponsors:

San Diego National Bank
The UPS Store
Initial Impressions
Maderas Golf Club

Thank you to all of our
donors and sponsors.

The day started off with possible rain showers, but we rallied the troops and marched on. The clouds opened up and the sun shined brightly as the golfers began to arrive. They were welcomed by the beautiful Miss Vistas and the wonderful staff at Maderas. As golfers checked in they received their goody bags, valued at over $500 each thanks to many generous goody bag donors.

Golfers were then offered a taste of San Diego with a lunch buffet that included food samplings from Ranch Catering, Smokin' Joes BBQ, Joao's Tin Fish Bar & Eatery, and Vigiluccis. A Putting Contest ensued, and the top 4 went on to compete in a $100K shootout at the evening reception.

The 1pm Shotgun Start set the golfers out for play on the gorgeous 18-hole course at Maderas. Some of the holes had extra items such as the Tequila station sponsored by Atel Communications, Closest to the Pin sponsored by GEICO, and two Hole-in-One opportunities thanks to Hoehn Mercedes and Sunroad Enterprise BMW.

The dinner and reception were beautifully decorated by Ramona Florist owner Sheri Brown, who also created the amazing gift baskets for the auction.

Special thanks our title sponsors: San Diego National Bank, The UPS Store and Initial Impressions.

And of course, a very special thanks to Shaun Phillips and his Chargers teammates that spent the day at Maderas.
